Leasing ArtWork Option
On the value of Slow
I like to take things in slowly; I'm slow in making my paintings, and in looking at paintings--my own or works by others. By contrast, our lives seem to be moving ever faster. Going to art museums and galleries is fun, exciting, and interesting, but seeing art in these settings generally doesn't encourage a slow savoring of our experience with the art. At best we get a quick look; there is seldom an opportunity for "deep looking." Time For me, time with well-made art allows for a richer experience, a far more satisfying appreciation. Time provides room to nurture a communion with a work and the intentions of the artist. I've long wanted to allow more people the chance to fully appreciate what I make. |
Art for Lease makes Original Art Accessible I want to make original art available to everyone, at a reasonable fee, to enjoy over a significant period of time (in homes or offices). This builds on several ideas:
How it works 1. Choose a piece you'd like to live with from the Gallery page 2. Send me an email to verify your interest 4. I contact you and we discuss options and delivery 5. You enjoy original art for 6 months-1 year w/ option to buy. Rates Generally six months @ 20%/purchase price, or 1 year @ $33% of the purchase price. Half of a one year lease may be applied toward purchase of that work. All contracts are renewable, if no request for rental or purchase by another party has been received for that work. |
Billboard Art vs. Enduring Quality Our culture thrives on speed, so we glance at the art in traditional settings for a few minutes at best. Maybe we recognize a style, or an appealing story, or attractive colors. We may even see something unique or provocative, but within a moment or two (often far less) we're urged to move on. We're obliged to take a quick bite and be happy; we rarely get to consider whether art has an enduring and satisfying richness. So we accept brief encounters rather than the richer long-term experience. I don't accept that art is like a billboard: providing a few seconds of distraction, delight, or information. Even thought much of the art of our age is created within this closed loop of expectations, it can be so much more. I've occasionally made, enjoyed, and benefitted from such art. It has a place. However, I prefer to make paintings that reward contemplation. The Affordability Issue I’m very grateful for the many supportive patrons who have purchased my work. Many art appreciators have limited budgets to purchase art offered at prices that are fair to the artist. Often works require many weeks or even months of earnest effort to create, and even "simple" pieces reflect years of sincere study and experience. |
